G-ABC-of-Breast-Feeding What Goes in Must Come Out!

If your baby is feeding well he will be gaining weight * and growing out of his clothes. Another way of telling if he is drinking enough milk is by looking in his nappies because what goes in must come out!

  • on the first day after he’s born, he should have made at least one dirty nappy of very dark green/black sticky stool called meconium.
  • sometimes it’s hard to tell if there is urine in the nappy with the black stool but the nappy will feel heavier if it’s wet too. There should be at least one  heavy, wet nappy
  • on the second day of your baby’s life he should make one to two dirty nappies of dark green stool (the meconium begins to get lighter in colour)
  • there should be two or more wet nappies
  • on day three and onwards, the stool should be changing to a yellowish colour and you should expect two, or more nappies with this yellow stool
  • you should also expect no less than three wet nappies in a twenty four hour period by the third day of life
  • this will increase to at least six very wet nappies in a twenty four hour period by the time your baby is about a week old and half as many dirty nappies
  • this is a guide and you should talk to your midwife/health visitor/paediatrician if you have any concerns
  • *Babies loose weight in the first few days after they’re born but should have regained their birthweight by about 10 days old
