G-ABC-of-Breast-Feeding What Goes in Must Come Out!

If your baby is feeding well he will be gaining weight and growing out of his clothes. Another good way of keeping an eye  on whether he’s drinking enough milk is by checking what’s in his nappies because what goes in must come out!

  • on the first day after he’s born, he should have made at least one dirty nappy of very dark green / black sticky stool called meconium
  • sometimes it’s hard to tell if there is urine in the nappy with the meconium but the nappy will feel heavier if it’s wet too. There should be at least one heavy, wet nappy
  • on the second day of your baby’s life he should make one to two dirty nappies of dark green stool (the meconium begins to get lighter in colour over the next few days)
  • there should be two or more wet nappies or evidence of urine
  • on day three and onwards the stool should be changing to a yellowish colour and you should expect two or more yellowish nappies
  • you should expect no less than three wet nappies in a twenty four hour period by the third day of your babies life
  • this will increase to at least six heavy, wet nappies in a twenty four hour period by the time your baby is almost a week old and half as many dirty nappies
  • this is a guide and you should talk to your midwife / health visitor/ paediatrician if you have any concerns
